On March 20, the 43rd Nature Researchers’ Day was organized by the Estonian Naturalists’ Society, with this year’s central topic being “Nature Restoration and Recovery. Several researchers from FutureScapes also shared their thoughts through presentations and discussions at the event: Aveliina Helm, Triin Reitalu, Eve Veromann, and Raul Rosenvald.
Participation at a panel discussion titled “Who needs nature conservation?”
As part of Green University Week, the University of Tartu hosted a discussion titled “Who Needs Nature Conservation?”, where Merle Karro-Kalberg, a member of our Landscape Biodiversity Group, also shared her thoughts as well.
Coffee morning - March 2026
In March 2026 we had our twelfth coffee morning on the topic „Prescribed burning of forests as a restoration tool in Fennoscandia: history, current practices and the way forward“.
FutureScapes development day
On February 12 we held our Centre of Excellence development day at the Emajõe-Suursoo Centre, where we set the main goals and activities for the year together.

In February 2026 we had our eleventh coffee morning on the topic „Symbiosis of Natural Processes and Contemporary Landscape Architecture: Creating a Sustainable Urban Environment“.
New moss species to Estonia was found from FutureScapes study site!
We have received confirmation that a new moss species to Estonia, Bryum violaceum / Gemmabryum violaceum, was found on our study site at Kämara field. The species currently has no established Estonian common name. It is a tiny green moss that primarily grows on disturbed soils, such as fields and other trampled or cultivated areas.
Participation at a discussion evening “War and Environmental Damage”
Last week, the Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Tartu organised a discussion evening titled “War and Environmental Damage”, which was also attended by Aveliina Helm, head of our Landscape Biodiversity Working Group.

In January 2026 we had our tenth coffee morning on the topic „First results of our fieldwork: greenhouse gases in our study sites“.
FutureScapes new research station
This Christmas, instead of putting up a Christmas tree, FutureScapes set up our new research station.
